"I've been drawing all my life but it was only after I retired that I took up art seriously. I was prevailed upon to join the committee of Hutt Art Society and was made a vice president because nobody else wanted the job. Within 18 months the President died and still nobody wanted the job! Basically I am a landscape painter but I also enjoy life drawing (nudes) and portraits. I was a cartographer before I retired. My wife Pam is a singer and my oldest son is a singer/composer so we are quite an artistic house." |

How about quickly looking through your membership list to see if there is anyone who would gain from attending the basic Rotary Learning and Information programme? Programme condensed so it only takes half a day out of the weekend. Cost: $25.00 per head, lunch is provided. Clubs normally pay for members who attend. Registration: Email to: Lee Wilkinson – lee@communicate.co.nz, or call her on 021 455 326. Please let her know any special dietary requirements. Who should come? · Newer members, who just need nudge on to real engagement with Rotary. · Longer standing members who have never quite ‘got’ Rotary , limp along to your regular meetings and not much else. They can be propelled into far better engagement. They can mix in with Rotarians from other clubs, as well as learning about the opportunities for personal growth and community involvement offered through Rotary - such as:

Eastern Hutt doesn't have to do any organising or coordination at all for this as they are now using a brilliant internet link: http://signup.com/go/qjDUWGb
If you would like to volunteer, all you have to do is click on buttons to book a location and time, not already taken, that suits you. It's that simple, and if you encounter any technical problem all you need to do is call WFA on 04 498 9604, and they'll get you booked in.
But please remember to wear your EHR Polio Shirt when you collect so that we are also visible to the public doing something that helps the community..
Many thanks, Des. |

For many years we have joined with Lower Hutt's Rotary and Lions clubs to collect food donations for the Lower Hutt Food Bank. Please get along to Avalon Pavilion, starting at noon. Not all of us are strong enough to run around the streets to pick up the white bags from donors. If this is you, then come along to the Pavilion after 1 p.m. and assist, at your own pace, with sorting the donations and packing them in to storage cases. The Food Bank has been rejuvenated and is now in good shape, When they lost their facility at the Horticultural hall they also suffered management confusion. That is now resolved. The Food Bank is a Registered Charity and has a distribution base which they lease in Duffy Street. They have storage at St Marks Church in Woburn Rd. Last year they distributed about 2200 parcels for the benefit of over 900 families. There are over 30 volunteers involved and they are financially sound. Donations of food received have been assessed at a value of $330,000. This project involves the cooperation of many Clubs. It takes only a few hours, yet it has an important impact. Please support them this Sunday. |

Police Vetting
Sep 24, 2018
John is going to give an explanation about the vetting. It will be hands-on, as those who are going to be working with youth, need to be vetted and we will then fill in the forms. NOTE: You will need to bring your Drivers Licence, or your current Passport, as well as a photocopy of it. To be safe, also bring a copy of a document with your current residential address, e.g. an electricity or rates bill. |

Using martial arts to teach leadership skills
Oct 08, 2018
I will talk about how traditional martial arts is more than just learning to fight or defend yourself. It is also a pathway to continuous self-improvement in either aspects of one’s physical or one’s mental well-being. We have identified that today’s children and youth are under more pressure than previous generations and they will experience more change in their lives than any of us did. I will bring with me one or two of my students who will also speak briefly on their experiences. The website address for our Academy is www.hapkido.co.nz |

"The Long Walk Home" is a combined Lions and Rotarian event - details are HERE.
The walkers are expected to pass under the Kennedy Good bridge from around 1.00 pm to 2.00 pm, where there would be an opportunity for a drinks station, that could be a fundraiser for the club.
Ideally, 6 to 10 members from our Club are required as Marshalls, placed at strategic points along the Hutt River Trail from 11.00 through to 2.30 - for one hour stints.
Alternatively, if those times do not suit and you're keen, there are other times between 8.00 am and 3.30 pm, and you'll be posted at other points along the route from the Wellington Railway station to Silverstream.

Science in Primary Schools - made fun for adults!
Dec 03, 2018
Find out how our young students learn about the world around them by having a play with the Hutt Science kits they use.
Hold a Beebot in your hand and make it's eyes light up (and maybe even race it with the next table), learn a new party trick or two, make a noisy musical instrument and see how a child's bones really look. You might even learn something new while you play!
