Last Meeting: Dennis McCord, Hutt Valley Toastmasters
Denis has somehow survived being a neighbour of the Alfords for many years but has kept his sanity and is still speaking to them. Among his other achievements has been working for the Office of Treaty Settlements and being a member of Toastmasters since 1984, and District Governor 2010-11.

Denis explained how Toastmasters was formed in California in 1924 with its first New Zealand club being Dunedin in 1952, (and Lower Hutt on Decimal Day, 10 July 1967). There are now over 50 Toastmaster Clubs in the Wellington Region.

People join Toastmasters to learn how to speak in public. Some stay for three years or so until they feel competent, others, like Denis, stay on. The Toastmaster Programme involves developing skills in speaking, leadership, coaching and researching, and further skills such as story telling, humour, using visual aids and timing. Essentially, members learn by giving a speech and having it evaluated. The evaluator is then also evaluated, as good evaluations leave the speaker feeling positive and wiser. There is a strong rumour of Toastmasters and Rotary becoming conjoined at the international level.

Denis's club meets weekly, on Monday nights 5.40 - 7.40, at the Arts Centre Building in Myrtle Street and visitors are always welcome.

WFMH Report

On March the 1st our inaugural Walk for Mental Health was held.  The weather was stunning, the harbour was flat, no wind – everything we could have possibly asked for.

Parting Thought:

"When I look back at the many times we have discussed the subject of club membership, we could say our effort has been below par.

Life is inherently risky.  There is only one risk we should avoid at all costs, and that is the risk of doing nothing."  ~ Unknown
