Last Meeting: Rani Heath - Music Therapy

Our speaker Rani Heath firstly thanked Eastern Hutt Rotary for our funding grant, which had enabled her to conduct her music therapy project for dementia clients.  Music therapy is the use of music in its many forms to assist the healing and personal growth of people.

There are 48,000 people in New Zealand living with dementia and this number is expected to triple and there is no known cure.  There is a relationship between depression and dementia and early intervention is so important.

She described the Music for Life programme she runs, explaining music sparks all areas of the brain, not just one specialised part. We fully understood the success she was having because of her very engaging personality.

Rani told us that her Masters in Music Therapy, which is a post-graduate 2-Year Degree, that only 12 a year are accepted, and requires many hours each year of professional development once qualified.

Brian Clarke
I am sure all Eastern Hutt Rotary members will wish to join with me in congratulating our member Brian Clarke on his well-deserved award in the Queen’s Birthday Honours, to the Membership of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Congratulations, Brian, and congratulations also to Mary – none of us males would have achieved what we have in life, without the support of our wives and partners!

My Rotary Story
In April 1987 our family including Jan’s mother reluctantly moved from Murray’s Bay on Auckland’s North Shore to Lower Hutt. The move was made for sound business reasons and not taken lightly. We left behind good schools, good friends and a good way of life. We had built a lovely wee house on our section for Jan’s mother, she was very happy there.
