Last Meeting: The Reverend Martin Robinson - Naenae Drop-in Centre
In introducing Reverend Martin Robinson, Des Darby explained that Martin as a priest at St David's Anglican Church in Naenae, is also a prison chaplain, had been a co-founder of Urban Vision, and instrumental in starting the very successful coffee cafe in Naenae, which trained and employed former inmates of Arohata Prison.  Des has been, with Martin, instrumental in the foundation of a Drop-In Centre for homeless people in Naenae Centre.

Martin told of his revulsion at the metal cages in the old Witako Prison.  He illustrated the gap between most well-meaning citizens and the poor with the quotation, "You tell me you care about the poor. Then tell me, what are their names?  What are their names?"

He and his wife Alison are determined to help bridge that gap by getting to know them.  With help from our Rotary Club and others, he has started a drop-in centre in Hillary Court.  He has a team of 12 volunteers, three of whom will be present at the room whenever it is open, currently 3-hours daily.  This way he is trying to help their people rehabilitate themselves.  As he said, he cannot turn the light on for them, but he can help them find the light switch.

In giving the club's thanks John Terris said how our club shared Martin's aims, and how much we admired what he was doing.

Parting Thought: (from Richard Perry)

" Be a caterpillar!  Eat as much as you want, of whatever you like. Go for a sleep. Then wake up beautiful!"
