Last Meeting: Gwen Hoople
We were treated to another amazingly interesting and varied life story. Gwen was born in Glasgow and that was the last conventional part of her life until recently. Because there was little work available her father, a piper and mandolin player, with an interest in boats, would work in England and be with his family too infrequently. And so they migrated to N.Z, choosing it over South Africa because a picture showed a sporran being correctly worn here, but not in South Africa.
At 19 Gwen went to live in Austria and stayed there for 19 years. Meeting a fellow grape-picker among the vines, she married, but later they divorced and jointly raised their daughter - her daughter still lives in Vienna. Gwen remarried and moved with her new husband Doug to California. As they both loved sailing they bought a boat and lived on it for seven years. It was traditionally built, with lots of mahogany - which needed three coats of varnish every six months.
In 2009 they moved to N.Z. and lived in Wellington, then Whitby, and now, finally in Upper Hutt. After careers in buying, banking and mortgage brokering, Gwen is now an Authorised Financial Adviser with NZ Financial Planning.
Being new to the Hutt Valley she has joined Rotary to be with friends and make new ones.
