Guest Speaker - Kevin Clark - Baghdad or Bust

This week's guest speaker, Kevin Clark gave a most interesting, humorous and educational presentation.

Born in South Africa, educated in Architecture at Cape Town University, he and a friend Jurgen were encouraged to travel to Europe and Asia to see and experience the ancient architecture of these distant lands.  They headed to London, bought a 1958 Matchless motor-cycle, attached a cargo carrying sidecar and set off.  This was 1964 with no GPS, no cellphones, no sponsors.  Many of the roads they travelled were nothing but dirt tracks but 31,500kms later, they made it back to UK.

PRESSIES PIECE

Another great Monday night just past.  Good food, good company and a great speaker.
Thank you to Robin Aitken for passing on the name of Kevin Clark, who spoke to us about his forays from ‘Baghdad or Bust’ in 1964. A motorbike with sidecar saw himself and a friend ride from London to Baghdad and back having many wonderful and slightly ‘hairy’ experiences along the way.  Kevin has given the same talk to 23 other clubs around New Zealand and was easy to see why he was in so much demand.

Parting Thought:

Jaye provided the parting thought at the end of our meeting -

Quote from the “New Arab” newspaper, which, sadly, I believe could apply to an increasing number of cities to-day.

Centuries of scholars, writers and travelers have been drawn to the streets of Baghdad, echoing the timeless Arab sentiment:
“Your eyes are like Baghdad, beautiful even in sadness”.

It stands as a testament to the fact that even the most scarred cities carry an eternal, undeniable soul.
