LAST MEETING - Warren Keenan

Warren Keenan teaches at the Lower Hutt Montessori School, the only secondary Montessori school in NZ. Warren taught at Tauranga Boys High School for many years so can claim some responsibility for successes like Sam Kane and Kane Williamson.

However, he gave a most impressive account of a  less traditional approach through the "Young Enterprise Award Scheme".

Some of his groups have organised "boomerang parties" for less well-off kids  who had never had a birthday party of their own, nor felt able to go to other’s parties because they could not afford a present. To do this, and other similar causes, his groups have shown amazing ability, ingenuity and persistence in raising money. Another group is raising money to provide families with emergency cell phones, another is raising money to help endangered species. Other activities have included direct social action such as cleaning beaches and bush trails.

In all these activities the students are developing a social conscience, but most of all they are learning to work with adult experts outside school and finding them enormously approachable and helpful. They never ask for charity but develop products and services which raise considerable amounts of money. Through this, students develop their own self confidence and also learn skills such as organisation (girls are better at this!!), working with others, especially adults, and perseverance.

One can only hope that more and more students have the opportunity to participate in the Youmg Enterprise scheme.

(Can you spot the deliberate mistake?)

General Notices:

* - Sergeant's Session  - $78.60

* - Notice from President Anne Abbott  - To ALL members of Eastern Hutt Rotary

I would like to remind you of our request to help us compile a record of vaccination stubs of our members.

Now that Covid is likely to spread to the Wellington region, some members are anxious to know how many if any of other members at meetings they attend, remain unvaccinated. We would like to give a positive assurance, if possible.

Depending on the information received, we may have to come to a decision on how we operate club meetings when the Traffic Light system is implemented.

If you are amenable to helping us make the best decision we can for health and safety of members, please would you present your double vaccinated certificate to the person doing the attendance record when you arrive at Rotary on Monday.  You can present your purple card if you don’t have your digital certification from the Ministry website yet.
If you are happy to disclose but prefer not to do so at the desk, please contact me directly.

We do not intend to make  details of individual responses generally available.

Thank-you,

Anne Abbott
Parting Thought:

Some reassuring thoughts for the Christmas period:

The inventor of the treadmill died at 54
The inventor of gymnastics died at 57
The best footballer in the world, Maradonna, died at 60
But
The inventor of KFC died at 94
The inventor of Nutella died at 88
The cigarette maker, Winston, died at 102
The inventor of opium reputedly died at 116 in an earthquake
The inventor of Hennessy Brandy died at 98

How did doctors  come to the conclusion that exercise is healthy?
The rabbit is always running and jumping and lives around two years
The tortoise seldom runs and never jumps and lives over 200 years
Relax, eat, drink and enjoy Christmas.
