Last Meeting: Lizzie Holmes, Safer Homes Programme Manager
Lizzie spoke on "Keeping People, Pets and the Environment Safe from Chemical Harm."  She started with an overview of what the Environment Protection Authority does, encompassing such things as the ET Scheme, new organisms, and managing chemicals.
Her talk concentrated on managing dangerous chemicals in the home.  Worryingly is out of every child aged 1 - 5 hospitalised there it's because of chemical poisoning, mainly from cleaning products or petrol.  She explained how the Authority tries to raise awareness through posters, worksheets and appearances at events and school visits.  The EPA regulates hazardous substances coming into NZ (through group standards) and have compliance officers following up where necessary.
She mentioned items of topical interest to members, particularly with spring gardening about to happen, and gave out chemical-resistant gloves - also pollinating pencils, as September is: Bee Awareness Month.
In answer to questions she said people wishing to dispose of chemicals such as old paint should check with their local councils as different councils had their own policies; if people were unsure about a particular item they should check the EPA website (Link is above) as the EPA has only 160 employees.  If you'd like to see more of her presentation, click HERE.
In thanking her, Judy Dearsley, mentioned that she too preferred natural remedies where possible, and how effective she had found vinegar and hot water for cleaning wood and concrete.
