Most Recent Meeting: Bill Sheat - Wellington's 1st Theatre in 1843
Fellow Rotarian of 40+ years gave a fascinating insight of when theatre was introduced to Wellington in the 1800's.  Evidenced with a series of images and photos (here), Bill told us that the first musical play, directed by Mr Marriott, was in May 1843 at the Royal Victoria theatre.  It was reported humorously that there was a disturbance before it started, so patrons had to sit on broken chairs, in a smokey whale oil lit atmosphere.

The existing Opera house opened in 1914 and was funded by McCarthy Trust.  In 1933, Dame Sybil Thorndick performed here and in 1948 there was a visit from the Old Vic with 3 sold-out productions.  They were very popular and Bill was excited to see one of them.

He reminded us that Hannah Playhouse was established by Jane Campion's mother Edith - it was a colourful trip down memory lane.

2019 Quiz Evening
The recent Quiz Night was a great success, with lots of fun identifying strange objects and substances in the quirky-question sections.  Over $
1,000 was raised for the Duffy Books in Homes programme, thanks to everyone who participated.

I'm A Storyteller
Unlike others,  I don’t have an amazing adventure overseas to tell you about (Well I do, but that’s another story), or a foray into something that will hold you spellbound as you read.  Rather I would like to share with you a piece of self-discovery that took one person, one sentence, to help me make complete sense of my life.
