LAST MEETING - Garcia Martin
As a past District Governor Martin knows a great deal about the Rotary Foundation, and as this is "Rotary Foundation Month" his talk was timely. The Rotary Foundation is an international institution. It encourages and, where appropriate, financially supports major Rotary projects.
Martin explained the seven areas of focus of the Foundation, giving us a few examples of how local clubs' projects were working within these areas with the advice and monetary support from the Foundation:
Promoting peace by supporting Amnesty International and working on preventing family violence.
Fighting disease, especially polio. Many local clubs are helping fit out the new Wellington Children's Hospital. Our contribution was to fund raise via the Wellington "Ride the Train Day", organised by Richard Perry.
Providing clean water and sanitation worldwide. Our club has the Ruchi project, led by Colin Alford and Deane McMillan.
Saving mothers and children by equipping a mobile health clinic in Rarotonga.
Supporting education. Wellington South is working with ESOL children and Porirua Rotary has set up a satellite Citizen's Advice centre.
Growing local economies.
Improving the environnent. Our own club works on the Hutt Riverbank, led by Paul Giles.
The Rotary Foundation provides grants, normally in the form of subsidies, for major projects the club supports. This year has seen 17 applications by clubs in our district for Foundation grants, of which eight were successful.
Through myopia we are often unaware of the good that Rotary achieves outside our district so thank you Martin for reminding us and making us aware of some of the projects local clubs are undertaking.

General Notices:
* - Sergeant's Session - $112.90
* - Notice from President Anne Abbott - To ALL members of Eastern Hutt Rotary
I would like to remind you of our request to help us compile a record of vaccination stubs of our members.
Now that Covid is likely to spread to the Wellington region, some members are anxious to know how many if any of other members at meetings they attend, remain unvaccinated. We would like to give a positive assurance, if possible.
Depending on the information received, we may have to come to a decision on how we operate club meetings when the Traffic Light system is implemented.
If you are amenable to helping us make the best decision we can for health and safety of members, please would you present your double vaccinated certificate to the person doing the attendance record when you arrive at Rotary on Monday. You can present your purple card if you don’t have your digital certification from the Ministry website yet.
If you are happy to disclose but prefer not to do so at the desk, please contact me directly.
We do not intend to make details of individual responses generally available.
Thank-you,
Anne Abbott
