Some Eastern Hutt Rotary News from President Anne Abbott
Richard Houston
On Thursday February 5th, we were told of the passing of Richard Houston.
Richard joined our Rotary Club in August 2005, and resigned, due to ill health, in 2016. Not only was he a member of Rotary, but also of the Pavilion Trust which he managed extremely well. It’s largely due to his efficient management, that we still enjoy a well-run Pavilion.
He and his wife Mary also became participants in a scientific study of the effective use of music in the early stages of dementia.
Richard’s funeral was at St James Church in Woburn Road on Tuesday February 8th at 1pm, and the Rotarians at the service formed a guard of honour as his casket left the church.
Postponed Events
Sadly, because of the threat of the Covid variants in the community, we have had to postpone many of our activities.
The golf tournament, which we are to run with Te Omanga Hospice has been postponed to a date later in the year, which we will be told about later.
The walk for mental health has also been postponed, and Shelley will let us know later, what this new date will be.
We have also had to postpone the pink ribbon breakfast, that we were hoping to run this year.
Events Still Going Ahead
Committee Dinner, 12th February
The trip to Wanaka organised between our club and Pat Heffernan’s club in Wanaka is, at present, still going ahead. Those of us that are going, will be flying down on February 21st. The only people who have had to pull out are Richard and Chris Perry, who were going to spend some time travelling through South Island by car. They considered this amount of time in so many places, too risky, and so are unable to visit Wanaka with the rest of us.
Film evening at the Lighthouse Cinema, 10th March (maximum, less than 100 people)
Thank-you for your continued support in this difficult time, and see you all on Monday 14th February.

The Power of Positivity
Parting Thought
“Thousands of people have donated thousands of hours of their time and millions of dollars to assist people they will likely never meet or know in places they have never heard of, let alone visited – they are Rotarians.” - Gary Stratton
Please study and plan ahead, especially if you are on duty to write a Bulletin Contribution. A reminder that it's also your responsibility to find a replacement if you are unable to fulfill your duty
