Last Meeting:Barry Cavanagh, Waste Management
Growing up in South Africa and marrying an American girl, Barry's lived in many places around the globe before recently settling in New Zealand. Actually, it their love of rugby that attracted them to live here. Barry joined Waste Management soon after he arrived in June 2018.
He focused his talk on kerbside collection of waste materials we put out for collection. Using samples that he brought with him, he gave an informative visual presentation on what can could be recycled, as well as where the product goes and what it is eventually made into. For example, unlike plastic milk bottles which remain in Wellington, wine bottles are sent to Auckland, and cardboard/paper is sent to Indonesia.
Interestingly, depending on where you live in NZ, recyclying of waste can vary a lot. It is the local Councils that decide what you can put in your 'green bins" and Upper Hutt is slightly different to Hutt City. Check out these "Links" to find out what you really can, and cannot, put in your bins.
Parting Thought:
“Waste is worse than loss. The time is coming when every person who lays claim to ability will keep the question of waste before them constantly. The scope of thrift is limitless."~ Thomas Edison
It was May 1989. I was one of a small team of engineers who flew first to the UK and then to Ludvika in Sweden for technical, project management, and quality management work on what were to become the new Thyristor Converter Banks of New Zealand’s upgraded HVDC link.
