Welcome to Eastern Hutt Rotary's e-Bulletin, which is still under trial, so all comments and suggestions are most welcome.
Thanks to those who provided feedback last week. smiley
Last Meeting's Speaker:
Hon. Chris Finlayson, Attorney-General.  He began by recognising several of our Members, more especially his past debating friends, David Gledhill and Colin Fenton.
As Rotary is respected as apolitical, the Minister centred his address on two boutique Agencies and his intriguing work as Head of the NZSIS and GCSB.  The former was founded 61 years ago to tackle espionage, once the domain of the Police Dept., while the latter was established much later to focus on the country's security.
Today's fundamental reform is, "To say as much as you can", versus old approach of, "Keep these matters secret."
Both organisations need constant supervision and they are strictly vetted by two expert legal members.
He believes today's bipartisan Legislation is sensible, with today's focus being:
1)  To protect against the surge of terrorism, and
2)  The rise in cyber crime and ransom demands.
In concluding, he emphasised the critical need to keep Policy and Operations strictly divided.  He will not get involved with Operations, but his team's focus is on reforms....and to keep out of the headlines!
Week's Parting Thoughts:
"It is not our differences that divide us.  It is our inability to recognise, accept and celebrate those differences."
