Last Meeting: Helen Down, CEO of the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce

Helen and her husband live on a life-style block in Moonshine with the aim to be as self-sufficient as possible.  They have both just completed an 8-day horse trek from Taihape to Raetihi.

Helen spent 15 years as a Board Member, then 6 years as President, so she's quite familiar with the work of the Chamber.  She is now CEO with a team of six.  It has 700 active members and holds 130 "events" such as courses, training days and other meetings a year.

It's actively involved with advocacy with central and local government, such as the "River Link" concept, SH58 and Naenae rejuvenation.  It is concerned that there are currently 22,000 young people not in employment, education, or training in the Wellington Region, having contracts with several ministries helping students into suitable work.  When asked about progress on the Cross-Valley Link, said they are not pushing that in the absence of the Granada-Petone connection.

Their three flagship events this year were: Wellington Business Expo at the new Events Centre, the Wellington Regional Business Excellence Awards and inducting two businesses into the local Business Hall of Fame.

Parting Thought:

"Love the country; do it no harm.  Serve the people; never betray them.  Follow science; discard superstition.  Be diligent; not indolent.  Be united, help each other; make no gains at others expense.  Be honest and trustworthy; do not sacrifice ethics for profit.  Be disciplined and law-abiding; not chaotic and lawless.  Live plainly, work hard; Do not wallow in luxuries and pleasures."  ~ Leoncio Vega (Ed)
