Last Meeting: Keith Quinn - "A Lucky Man"
Keith was raised in Benneydale in the King Country.  His father came out from Canada to work on the coal mine there; his mother was from Scotland.  His Dad was a dynamic sportsman but sadly in his late 30’s, he was diagnosed with occupational cancer.  Because of his health, they decided to move, buying a house in Vogeltown; sadly he died at age 41, leaving his mother to raise 5 boys.

What started Keith's passion for sport was he became the message boy for his father, reporting all the sports of the day.  With Athletic Park a short distance from their home, this was a regular venue.  Luck transpired and he got offered an entry as a broadcasting cadet.

The broadcasting scene around the early 70's became crazy with the introduction of television - he joined just at the right time.  His career took off and he was sent all over the world, to the Olympics, Commonwealth Games and many other sporting events - some 170 countries visited.  A comprehensive summary of his fascinating background is HERE.

In 2015 his career started to wind down.  Today, he happily reflects on 32 years in media and enjoying quality time with Ann, his wife of 48 years.

 Week's Parting Thoughts:

"When we watch a game of rugby by 2 great teams (National or International) where the outcome can not be predicted, we are immersed in a world where for 80 minutes we can forget about any political/health/personal problems and just enjoy the skills of men (and women) playing one of the great team sports in the world." ~ Gary Stratton

Naenae College 2018 Awards
             Brook Waldron                           Hazel Schapel
On Tuesday 6 November, I represented us at The Naenae College Senior Prize giving.  It was heartening to see so many students from a wide variety of backgrounds being recognised for their achievements.  The reaction from the student body to the awards showed a heartening generosity of spirit and a happy pride in their school.

Science in Primary Schools - made fun for adults!
Find out how our young students learn about the world around them by having a play with the Hutt Science kits they use.

Hold a Beebot in your hand and make it's eyes light up (and maybe even race it with the next table), learn a new party trick or two, make a noisy musical instrument and see how a child's bones really look. You might even learn something new while you play!
