Last Meeting: Janice Henson - Te Omanga Hospice
Married with 2 children, Janice manages 500 volunteers at the Te Omanga Hospice, including 3 shops. She does this in 28 hours a week, thanks to others. Her duties are to recruit, train and retain. She's committed to make sure their experience is a good one but her job can never be planned until she gets to work that day.
All volunteers are fully vetted and fully trained, especially in Health and Safety standards. Even though some have served for over 40 years, retention remains bane of every managers' life as they are ambassadors and highly valued. In fact they've been nominated as one of the Wellington Community Awards to be decided at Te Papa this week.
They are champing at the bit to get back to Woburn Road, due to be finished by end March 2019. To check out the progress made by Amstrong Downes, including a live camera update, click HERE.
Week's Parting Thoughts:
"Human life is precious and we should all support each other. Look at the global picture and help where we can." ~ Paderic McKeon
"Volunteer with two ears and one mouth; listen and learn from the people you're working with."~ Andrew Ashe
Eastern Hutt Rotary does some wonderful things in our local community. That hard work and money is helping kids who might otherwise miss out, or we do any of those other myriad supportive things we are known for, it somehow feels more connected or more personal and perhaps more relevant because it is local.
Mary and I have been fortunate to enjoy many overseas trips to North America, Europe and a few to Asia. But as they say, "Don't leave home till you've seen your own country", so 10 years ago I decided I needed to 'knock-off' the New Zealand's Great Walks.
Please study and plan ahead, especially if you are on duty to write a Bulletin Contribution. A reminder that it's also your responsibility to find a replacement if you are unable to fulfill your duty.
* November is "New Members' Month":Who have you been meaning to ask to join us?? Invite them along to listen to Keith Quinn. Potential new members will be free, not spouse or partners. Reminder: Inform Dave Morris and Judy Dearsley if you're bringing someone.
*Funds Raised:Sergeants Session - $123.00; Rotary Foundation - $29.00
* Treasurer's message: There are several members who have yet to pay their subscriptions for the period July-December 2018 which were due by 30 September. Please pay promptly - any doubts, please contact me.
Also, at the end of November we balance the meal accounts for the year and estimate if you have and monies to credit against your meal charges for the Christmas function. Some members will be in debit coming into December. Reason is meal charges are averaged over the full 12 months and some did not pay back in January. I maintain a spreadsheet of meal receipts and debits so if you're unsure, please ask – for both parties peace of mind!
