Last Meeting:Tony Heyward, District Membership & Development Chair
Tony has served in this role for the past two years and spoke passionately on developing clubs and growing membership. His theme was, "Where are tomorrow's Rotarians?" and, "What do I do in Rotary and Why?". He explained that worldwide, Rotary membership is growing because of growth in Asia, but it is declining in USA, Canada, UK and NZ. In fact in UK, the average age of Rotarians 73. In our District, there are 1512 Rotarians which a net decline of 90 over a year.
His thesis is that the traditional club format is not working, and clubs should consider new approaches. There are grounds for hope, though as there are 21,000 Interact Clubs in the world, 11 in our District. Some clubs are adopting new approaches, and recently NZ Rotary has established an arrangement with Toastmasters that could/should lead to a new stream of members.
Something must be done he said and asked us to ask ourselves, "What are we going to do differently this year?" In answer to a question he stressed that we are a service body and should be project/cause orientated, not just a fundraising organisation.
A very big welcome back in Rotary to Linda Goss-Wallace! Linda joined Eastern Hutt Rotaract in 1985, then a year later moved back to Wainuiomata and joined Wainuiomata Rotaract. Over the next 7 years she held all the board directorships and was President for two years.
Last evening Jaye Howey and myself had the honour to attend Government House to celebrate 25 years of Duffy books in Homes and receive acknowledgment of Eastern Hutt's contribution to such a wonderful cause.
Please study and plan ahead, especially if you are on duty to write a Bulletin Contribution. A reminder that it's also your responsibility to find a replacement if you are unable to fulfill your duty.
