Last Meeting:Merilyn Merrett, "Friends of Waiwhetu Stream"
On Monday we had an amazing example of what one person, with community support, can achieve. Merilyn Merrett spoke of the work and achievements of the Friends of Waiwhetu Stream. Before the earthquake of the 1840s the Waiwhetu had a ship-building yard where Whites Line East cuts it, and a flour mill at Norton Park Avenue. After the earthquake the stream diminished even though it drains over 50% of Lower Hutt City. By the 1970s it was grossly neglected and polluted, even spontaneously bursting into flames on one occasion, and flooding houses at its lower reaches. Although the authorities made desultory attempts to clear it the river remained polluted and unkempt.
Merilyn Merrett taught at the Open Polytech and determined to change the situation. In 2011 she formed the Friends of the Waiwhetu Stream and leading by example and working with the three relevant local authorities they have transformed the stream. They have been clearing it of rubbish, clearing it of weeds and planting appropriate vegetation. All these tasks sadly, have to be ongoing as weeds continue to grow and undesirables continue to dump rubbish which has to be collected (20 x 50 litre bags a month!).
The result is a stream which it is a delight to walk along and which is equipped with picnic tables and barbeques. It is truly amazing what one person, highly qualified and highly motivated and with great leadership can achieve.
A dedicated few have been working hard during this holiday period to present this inaugural event. Make it a family event and please share this information with your friends too - especially if you're on Facebook!
