LAST MEETING: Trudi Thomas-Morton
There are some people who make one wonder what one has been doing with one's life when you hear what they have done with theirs, so far. Trudi was one such person. A friend of Jan's since they both worked in Paul Swain's electorate office. Purple hair, a nose ring, and bangles up to her elbows would be a forewarning. She's been a school dental nurse, a veterinary nurse, a Secretary to a Senior Cabinet Minister, a NZ rep. equestrian, a Pilates instructor and, most recently, a dedicated cameleer when not working as a community care worker in Levin.
Trudi spoke mostly about her cameleering in the Simpson Desert which involved looking after, provisioning and leading camels for a geological expedition. She enjoyed this so much she completed the Mongolian Camel Derby in eight days hard (actually very hard) riding. There she met a Mongolian family living in a yurt, following an age-old lifestyle except that their children were going to university in China. After the Derby she went to ride reindeers in Northern China. (Well, she would, wouldn't she?)
We learned a lot from her talk and subsequently her answers to questions: On an expedition a camel can comfortable travel 20-25kms; Camels do not like clambering up steep hills, but zig zag up like a mountain road; Camels are very intelligent and have prodigious memories; Annoy one and it will remember months later; Camels can live up to about thirty years.

A very interesting evening was enjoyed by members and their guests at Avalon Pavilion on Friday 4th June. Even though it was leading up to Queens Birthday, this fundraising event for the Wellington Children's Hospital raised nearly $5,000.
