Last Meeting: Warwick Johnston
Warwick Johnston spoke about his experience as local historian and heritage consultant and his passion for communicating its importance for our collective heritage in the Hutt Valley.

His background as a history teacher and author of several non-fiction books and three novels led to him to becoming a full-time heritage consultant for the region.  However, he also expressed his frustration about his expert knowledge not being acted upon in spite of long-standing laws.

He spoke about lost cemeteries such as the Knox Methodist Church site in High Street being totally minimalised, the St James Church site in Woburn Road, cut in half by a public driveway to a carpark, the Wesley cemetery next to Bridge Street, now under the Fire Station. He believes the Council demolishes buildings with little consultation on specific archaeological sites, e.g. the Hutt Club in Myrtle Street, Korokoro (now a lawn) and the Te Puni cemetery (now the back of a fish shop) and the burial ground which is now the new garden centre at the back of IBM.

He will no doubt continue his passionate crusade to fight for greater recognition of those sites.
