This chair is not just a chair. It represents the passing of our dear friend Joe Tomlinson, our colleague, our fellow Rotarian who has sadly left this world and travelled to the next.  With the deepest of respect we place it here that we may never forget his servitude to Rotary and the people of this city.  Moe mai ra e hoa - sleep well dear friend.

In Memory of Joe Tomlinson

It is with deep respect and gratitude that we remember Joe Tomlinson, a cherished member of Eastern Hutt Rotary for an extraordinary 47 years. Joe joined our club on 26 September 1978 and, from the very beginning, became a pillar of service, dedication, and fellowship.

In 1995–1996, Joe served as our club president, a role in which his leadership and vision made a lasting impact. Among his many achievements that year was organising a team to support the Mana Island tree planting programme—planting more than 500 trees, a contribution that continues to benefit the environment decades later.

Joe’s commitment to service extended far beyond his presidential year. He:

  • Helped maintain the Garden of Remembrance at Hutt Hospital.
  • Assisted with landscaping at the Women’s Refuge.
  • Played a key role in building the Avalon Park kiosk.
  • Drove the ongoing project of painting and maintaining Te Omanga Hospice.
  • Contributed to countless other community projects and initiatives.

Over the years, Joe was actively involved in most of our fundraising events and served with distinction as a director on several committees. His unwavering commitment was recognised through his being named a Paul Harris Fellow, one of Rotary’s highest honours.

Joe’s life was a shining example of Rotary’s motto: Service Above Self. His hard work, generosity, and quiet determination have left an enduring mark—not only on our club but on the wider community.

Joe, you were more than a valued member; you were an inspiration. We salute your service, your friendship, and the difference you have made in so many lives.
