Thank you everyone for another great Rotary evening. I know President Robin wishes he could have been with you. As mentioned, he sends you all his regards as he recovers and looks forward to moving ahead with this year.
It was nice to be able to welcome our friend Pat Heffernan from the ‘chilly South’ to the ‘chilly North’ and to have him regale us with the astounding results they have had with inducting new members over the past year. Twenty-six new faces eager to become part of Rotary Wanaka, and six more to interview on his return. What a fantastic result. Pat was sure most had moved to this part of the South Island for the beautiful views and of course the snow, and all eager to meet new people. I loved the way he concluded with the saying “26 new friends, 26 new neighbours, potentially 26 new businesses and opportunities”. Interestingly, most of these people were of the average age of middle to late 40’s.
In the absence of our speaker who had succumbed to the ‘flu’, David Gledhill gave us an exercise in logical thinking.
We had to imagine the following:
“You are a member of a space crew that was originally scheduled to rendezvous with a mother ship on the lighted surface of the moon. Due to mechanical difficulties, your ship was forced to land at a spot 300 km from the rendezvous point. During the landing, much of the equipment aboard was damaged and since survival depended on reaching the mother ship, the most critical items available had to be chosen for the trip”.
We then had to rank them. Suffice to say, we had a lot to learn but David was very patient with us. As always there was a table of logical thinkers who saved the day should it be real.
A big thank you was given to all those who helped with the 3 days RYDA involvement. Another successful initiative.
Paul was able to let us know that the community group ‘Naenae Knitters’ was being shown on 7Sharp Wednesday evening. One of my last duties as President was to join with Paul and his wife Christine, visiting the group and presenting them with a donation of $1000 from Eastern Hutt Rotary. This will allow them to purchase much needed pure wool to aid them in providing warm clothing for preemie babies in the NICU unit of the hospital. The group also knits scarves, beanies and gloves for school children in the Hutt Valley and are very grateful for any donations. Our own Christine Meredith is a part of this group of lovely people.
