Oh my gosh, wasn’t it a great talk from Claire Rumble and her cousin Judith Dods at our last meeting? We really have some beautiful historic places in Lower Hutt that are well worth visiting. Perhaps we could have a think about hosting an event there at some time. I’m sure you will all love it as much as I do.
As I look out the ranch slider this afternoon at the beautiful sunny day we are experiencing, I am reminded that our cold and wet winter is just around the corner so I do hope you are all getting prepared to stay warm and dry. Air out those winter woollies, stock-up on the firewood, unearth the flannelette sheets and pop the warm jammies to the top of the drawer. If you’re like us who do not own electric blankets, then you’ll need the hotties on standby as well. My dear old Mum would have called me a ‘jolly joy germ’ but that’s the reality of a few months of wind and rain I guess.
I’ve had a couple of questions around my proposal for a mini Rotary Anzac service on the 20th April. I would like to premise this by saying I understand many of you will go to your own services, as will I. That however, does not stop us as a Rotary group that believes in honouring our communities from remembering our ancestors, family members and those who gave their lives, by holding a small commemorative service close to the day. As a club we will observe this day on Monday 27th, meaning we will not be holding the usual meeting that night.
My plan is we meet at an earlier time, say 5.15pm on the 20th, ready to start at 5.30. James has kindly agreed to lead the service for us. I encourage you to wear any medals you may have to lend importance to the meaning of the Anzac commemoration. Our normal meeting will start close to 6pm or shortly thereafter. We have an exciting speaker for the night. After much thought I have also decided we will continue with our sergeant session at the normal time slot. Poppies are on sale now so those who can are asked to wear these as well.
I hope you all had a wonderful stress free enjoyable Easter.
