Last Meeting: Tamsin Davies-Colley and Donna Clark from Naenae College's Special Needs Unit
Tamsin Davies-Colley, Head of the Special Needs Unit at Naenae College and one of its teachers, Donna Clark, spoke of the work of the Unit. Tamsin become Head when Julia Lee, a past Member of Eastern Hutt Rotary, retired two and a half years ago, and Donna joined in 2017. They explained how contact had first been made via Des Darby, and  how it led to our club supplying a class set of iPads.

The Special Needs Unit is housed in a 2013 purpose-built facility and currently has 37 students. "Te Whare o te Atawhai" lives up to its name, "House of Caring".  They showed us clips of students with Special Needs learning and playing with the iPads, and explained how the use of the iPads was not random but went through four stages as a teaching device: substitution, augmentation, modification and re-definition. Julia, who still teaches two spells a week voluntarily at the Unit, accompanied Donna and Tamsin, and the enthusiasm and love they share for the Unit and the students was very apparent .

As Anne Abbott said in her vote of thanks, it was a learning experience for all of us.
