Informal First Meeting for the Year

A lovely start to the New Year
Thank you everyone for the relaxed but happy atmosphere beginning the New Year for Rotary 2026.  It was lovely seeing everyone again and catching up with what has been happening in your lives.
A big thank you to our brilliant BBQ experts, Ron and Paul, not forgetting the kitchen servers and chefs Tony, Shelley and June.  Our meal was delicious and appropriate after battling a few days of horrendous winds.

The Power of Positivity

MORE OF COLIN'S THOUGHTS FOR 2026
(Courtesy of Colin Alford)

1. Doesn't "expecting the unexpected" make the unexpected expected?

2. Why are a "wise man" and a "wise guy" opposites?

3. Why do "overlook" and "oversee" mean opposite things?

4. Why is "phonetic" not spelled the way it sounds?

5. If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay you to do it?

6. If all the world is a stage, where is the audience sitting?

7. If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular?

8. If you are cross-eyed and have dyslexia, can you read all right?

9. Why is bra singular and panties plural?

10. Why do you press harder on the buttons of a remote control when you know the batteries are dead?

11. Why do we put suits in garment bags and garments in a suitcase?

12. How come abbreviated is such a long word?

13. Why do we wash bath towels?  Aren't we clean when we use them?

14. Why doesn't glue stick to the inside of the bottle?

15. Why do they call it a TV set when you only have one?

16. Christmas - What other time of the year do you sit in front of a dead tree and eat candy out of your socks?

17.  Why do we drive on a parkway and park on a driveway?

General Notices

* The roster can change weekly with absences etc so please check the roster each week to see if you have a duty.

* Absences from Rotary
If you are going to be absent from Rotary for any length of time please let Jan know so she does not put you on the roster while you are away.

* Guest Speakers
Can you please put your thinking caps on and suggest speakers for next year.  If you have any suggestions can you please discuss with President Glenda.

* Russell Good's Funeral
A huge thank you to all who attended the funeral service for our good friend Russell Good last week.  There was a fine turn out of people to pay tribute to the amazing man he was. Thank you also to James and Brian who gave outstanding tributes in respect of Russell's community and work service.  Russell will be sadly missed but he has left behind a legacy of care and compassion to many people.
President Glenda

* Assistance with Petone Rotary Fair
I want to share that thirteen of our Club are available to assist the Petone Club with the Rotary Fair on 21 February.  This is an amazing turnout - nearly half our club.  I know others of you would have helped if your health or private commitments had allowed it.
So, congratulations everyone and a big 'Thank You' from Petone Rotary Club.
Regards
June Stratton

* Te Omanga Hospice Charity Golf Tournament
This year's golf tournament is being held on Friday 20 February at Boulcott Farm Golf Course.  Jan will be coordinating the club's volunteers again this year.  She will be looking for helpers with the barbecue, putting gazebo's up and down, and assistance at the auction.  Jan will put a board around asking for volunteers at our 2 February meeting.

Community & Member Activity
The Four Way Test
Jaye would like to remind members of the Rotary 4 Way Test as we start a new year assisting our community both local and international.

Parting Thought

Buddha states:
"No matter how hard the past is, you can always start again.  When there is a start to be made, don't step over! Start where you are.  The master is a beginner who never gave up. The person who removes a mountain begins by carrying away small stones."
President Glenda
