David conducted discussion groups and members (including 2 visitors) at each of the 5 tables were given the following question to discuss:
"Our government is short of money. Many other countries have a wealth tax and an inheritance tax. Should New Zealand have a wealth tax on everyone who owns money or property worth over one million dollars and an inheritance tax of 20% on all property and assets worth over $500,000?
If you agree with the idea but not the figures, what figures would you agree on? "
It was suggested that each table select a 'Chairperson', selection being on age with the youngest present taking the Chair. Strict guidelines were given, such as everyone having the opportunity, initially, to present their thoughts without interruption, before moving to more general debate. After spirited discussion in the groups the Chairpeople then took turns to report, with the result that 4 groups were against the proposal with only one being in agreement. Participation by all in the groups was great to see.
