We were fortunate to have Matt Read speak to us at our last meeting. Matt became the Chief Executive Officer of Barnardos in July 2023, following his tenure on the Board of the organisation from 2012 – 2022.
Barnardos is a global charity with its headquarters in London. It was founded by Thomas John Barnardo in 1866 with the aim of caring for vulnerable children. The first boys’ home was built in 1870 – it opened with 11 boys and had the Motto; “An ever open door”
Barnardos was set up in New Zealand in 1972 and is our largest children’s charity focusing on building strong foundations for children’s educational and life outcomes. It offers a wide range of services including early learning, and supporting children and families through tough times - such as those facing family violence, addiction, neglect and mental health challenges.
We were shocked to learn of the increasing inequality amongst peoples of New Zealand. Figures indicate that 1 in 8 experience material hardship and 1 in 7 family violence. Matt is passionate about alleviating poverty and high deprivation and believes that young people, in particular, can be resilient and strong, with support helping to rekindle an inner strength and spirit.
‘Youth Inspire’ supports youth dropping out of school and there are a few residential homes for teenagers.
‘What’s Up’ is a free helpline for those aged 5 – 19 years.
It is open 12 hours daily, 365 days a year with qualified counsellors.
Matt closed by telling us that the organisation needs to fundraise $5M a year in order to keep all New Zealand services viable.
