Youth and Employment Committee
Report to Assembly. Monday 20 June 2022
I would like to start this report by paying tribute to David Wilson, a totally committed member of this committee, who was always keen to offer new ideas and very supportive of all initiatives. We miss him dearly. Other members of the committee were Robin Aitken, Mike Fackney, Annette Ruck, Paddy Wells and myself.
Our major, and only, fundraising project, was held in July when we sold out the largest theatre at the Lighthouse for the showing of the Musical Film “In the Heights” A very pleasing aspect of this was that we sold 59 of the 112 tickets to people with no Rotary connection whatsoever. We made a profit of $1489; $485 of this being from the raffle organised by Paul Giles and his Environment Committee.
Our second intended major fundraiser, a “Quiz with a Difference” was discussed at all our committee meetings and two dates were set, only to be cancelled owing to the team’s assessment that the chances of attracting 80 plus people to an evening Quiz, in to-day’s “Nervous about Covid” world, were low. This is currently on “Hold”!
Another, smaller, fundraiser - the Weetbix TRYathon - was cancelled by the organisers.
I am currently in the process of presenting 99 Usborne Illustrated Dictionaries to year 4 students at Naenae School, Taita Central School, Pomare School and St Michael’s School. I anticipate completing these presentations by the end of this week. We have continued to sponsor Duffy Books in Homes at Rata Street School. Our $1,000 Scholarship to a senior Naenae College student was awarded to Makayla Elliott.
Over the year, members have enjoyed presentations from 3 young people with connections to this committee and this club. Lucy Taylor gave an impressive report on her experiences at Innovative Young Minds in October and, also that month. Olivia Krakosky told us where her career had taken her since we’d supported her with her costs in 2014, during her Internship at the New Zealand Permanent Mission to the United Nations. Another impressive presentation was from Myah Sinke, whom we’d sponsored to RYLA in January. We look forward to hearing from Fiona Varun (a year 12 Naenae College student) whom we are sponsoring to Innovative Young Minds in July, after she has completed the course.
