Last Meeting: Hayley Buchan & John Anderson
Hayley Buchan (team leader) and John Anderson (a volunteer) spoke about the "Healthy Families in the Hutt" project. The premise is that we should all have the same opportunities to thrive. The project started in 2014, funded by the Ministry of Health, and runs in the ten poorest communities in New Zealand. Lower Hutt is one of these.

Children in these communities are over twice as likely to be obese as other children. The original aim was to address obesity, but it widened to address all aspects of healthy living. Hayley and her team work with schools, churches, sports clubs and other groups. They encourage healthy nutrition, physical activity, and mental well-being. They discourage smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. They also encourage Hutt Council to help in ways such as providing play areas and smoke-free zones, and helping with public transport.
